CEFR
The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is a six-level scale of language ability, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery), used to pitch and compare language assessments.
Published by the Council of Europe, the CEFR describes what a learner can do at each level across skills like reading, listening, and speaking. It gives language teachers a shared vocabulary for how demanding a text or task is.
In assessment, the CEFR matters for matching both the text and the questions to the learner's level: a B1 reader given a C1 passage will fail questions they would have answered easily on a text pitched to them.
